LAW DAY 2022 (Updated March 19, 2022)

The 2022 Law Day theme is “Toward a More Perfect Union: The Constitution in Times of Change.”

We will observe this year’s Law Day on May 2, due to the actual day (May 1) falling on a Sunday this year.  This is a joint project by the Russell County Bar (founding and organizing sponsor), Southwest Virginia Legal Aid Society, Tazewell County Bar, Washington County Bar, City of Bristol Bar, Buchanan County Bar, the 28th District Criminal Defense Bar, the Virginia Mountain/Valley Lawyers’ Alliance (VMVLA), students from the Appalachian School of Law, Marsh Blood Services, and the Virginia Red Cross.

All of the events will occur from 9am-5pm on that day, and will take place in Lebanon, Abingdon, Marion, and Tazewell. We are currently working on the details for marketing, and are open to any assistance. There will be free food at the Lebanon and Marion locations for “Service Heroes” (police, healthcare, firemen, military, etc.) and those who give blood, as well as shirts for blood donors.

The Dept. of Veteran Services, National Guard, People, Inc., and Anthem HealthKeepers (thusfar) will set up at the two locations in Lebanon and Marion “only.” All the locations, to include Abingdon and Tazewell, will have blood drives and offer pro bono clinics, where we can screen applicants and talk to them about their legal issues w/ help from several bar associations.

We hope to debut the Law Day video(s) on or about the date of our Law Day observance, and the 2022 video will include some footage from the event itself.  There will be opportunities for public officials to participate in the events, and speak if they wish.

There will also be a live Continuing Legal Education, presented in conjunction with VMVLA, live on-site in Abingdon, simulcast to Marion, Tazewell, Lebanon, and possibly Grundy.  This year, continuing his theme of Executive Power, Prof. John Woodward will address  “Presidential Powers and National Security When The President Takes Extreme Measures During Wartime.” This program will focus particularly on the seminal case of Korematsu v. United States.  This CLE is offered to all Virginia Attorneys at no cost, with an optional donation to support the Special Olympics 2022 USA Games.  Members of the public and students are invited to attend as well.  For further details, see: https://www.virginia-mountain-valley-lawyers-alliance.org/product/law-day-event-executive-power-in-wartime-may-2-2022-at-1pm-edt/90?cs=true&cst=custom
